Arctic - Polar Bears - North Pole
We learned a lot about polar bears and the Arctic. We learned that the Arctic is not a continent, just frozen water. We learned that a lot of other animals live in the Arctic. A lot of those animals can change to a white color in the winter to blend in with the ice and snow. In the summer, their fur turns brown. We know this is called using camouflage.
We also learned that people live in the Arctic. They are called Inuit Eskimos.
The picture shows how polar bears use a layer of blubber to keep warm. We put one hand in ice water without any protection, and the other hand we put into a baggy that was surrounded by a layer of Crisco (to simulate the blubber). We decided that the hand with "blubber" was definitely much warmer in the ice water.
