These are the Air Force core values and the values I try to carry over into my classroom.
I served for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant in August 2005. Our family decided to make one final move to be closer to the rest of our extended family and we relocated to Lenoir in September 2006. I started working at Kings Creek School as a middle school math tutor and was hired the next year as a middle school teacher assistant. It was during my time there that I realized I wanted to become more than a teacher assistant. I really wanted to have my own classroom and work with my own students.
Appalachian State University began a BS in Middle Grades Education program at Caldwell Community College in the fall of 2007. I applied, was accepted, and began working towards becoming a middle school teacher. I graduated, Magna Cum Laude, in May 2011. I passed both the North Carolina science and mathematics Praxis, earning the distinction of being Highly Qualified.
I was hired to be a 6th grade math & science teacher at Gamewell for the 2011-2012 school year. This year (2020-2021) will be my tenth year here, working with 6th grade students.
I chose the science concentration because I want my students to realize that science exists all around them. I have always enjoyed investigating and discovering new things and I want to pass that onto my students.
I decided on the mathematics concentration because as a student, I struggled with math. I always felt that everyone “got it” except for me. I believe that I can understand and relate to why many students feel discouraged in math and I want to work with them to help them realize that they can be successful, and yes, grow to like math!
What do I do in my spare time? I enjoy being outdoors and I love to read. Currently, we are a three cat (all shelter rescues and strays) household.
