CIVA Families and Students:
As we approach the end of the school year, we want to thank you for the journey you have taken with us as we piloted our first two Caldwell Innovative Virtual Academy (CIVA) courses. We hope that you have grown as virtual learners.
Despite interruptions by COVID-19 to our traditional schedule, CIVA courses were able to continue with a relatively small amount of disruption. Coursework was able to continue for CIVA students. However, state-mandated testing for Physical Science was cancelled, and end-of-course grading practices have been modified. The following section explains grading modifications. You will be contacted by either your CIVA teacher or a school contact to select your grading option.
In response to COVID-19, grading procedures will follow guidelines from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and are listed as follows:
Middle school students who are enrolled in high school classes, such as CIVA, will follow 9-11 Guidelines for Grading.
9-11 Guidelines for Grading: Students will choose how each final course grade will appear on their transcripts for currently enrolled courses.
- Option 1 - Students can choose to report the numeric grade representing learning prior to March 13 or as improved during remote learning. Students will receive course credit.
- Option 2 - Students can choose to report a PC19 (pass) or WC19 (withdrawal) rather than receiving the numeric grade. Students who choose to report a PC19 will receive course credit. Students who choose a WC19 would not earn credit for the course. However, they could take advantage of credit recovery or repeating a course for credit. No student will receive a failing grade. Additionally, neither PC19 nor WC19 will impact Grade Point Average (GPA).
If you should have questions about any of these grading options, feel free to contact your child’s CIVA teacher or Kim Case at email@example.com.
Thank you again for participation in the CIVA courses!
